POLARITY THERAPY

Polarity Therapy is an Integrative Approach to Energy Medicine
Integrative practice strives to bring medicine into a holistic paradigm with the primary focus on health rather than disease while building bridges between western medicine, traditional and ancient healing systems, and manual and energy-based holistic health modalities. This perspective connects the internal biological experience of health and illness with the outer world to include an individual’s social, cultural, socio-economic, emotional/psychological, spiritual, and energetic experience as being equal partners in understanding and implementing a healing plan.
What is Polarity Therapy?
Polarity Therapy is based on the premise that we are fields of pulsating life energy made up of specific frequencies known as the five elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Each element relates and flows in a balance of positive and negative attractions arising from a neutral center. When our thoughts, emotions, and physical body are out of alignment with the energy necessary to meet a life challenge, an energy imbalance results. These imbalances may appear as physical, mental, and emotional discomfort or pain.
An ongoing and dynamic balance of life energy is our foundation for health and well-being. Polarity Therapy helps us to develop this balance by promoting the flexibility, spontaneity, creativity and clarity necessary to meet the challenges of both big transitions and those of everyday life.
The Foundations of Polarity Therapy
Polarity Therapy was developed by Dr. Randolph Stone (1890-1981), a naturopath, chiropractor, and osteopath who traveled around the world integrating the knowledge of many different energetic systems to create his own therapy bridging western and eastern perspectives on energy medicine. Polarity Therapy is built around the sub atomic understanding of how the movement of energy in all living things is propelled outward by forces of attraction (+ charge) and repulsion (- charge) from a neutral central core and then back again, This can be visualized as a toroidal field. This movement back and forth is caused by these positive and negative charges, hence the name, Polarity.
One of Dr. Stone’s primary influences was from Ayurvedic Medicine and utilizes the five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth as expressions of the 3 originating energy flows as they step down and crossover the body creating energy centers, or chakras, a unifying structure for understanding and treating all aspects of the body, mind and spirit. Polarity Therapy focuses on maintaining an ongoing, dynamic balance of life energy in and around the body. This balance is crucial for health and well-being and is achieved through the integration of four main strategies.
How are the 4 main strategies used in Polarity Therapy?
Bodywork: Involves moving energy in the field around the body and also gentle rocking, stretching, and pressure-sensitive touch based on energy flow, including cranial-sacral, reflexology, and energy healing.
Exercise: a series of easy stretching postures that combine sound, breath, and self-massage.
Diet & Food Awareness: Viewing food as energy and fostering creative nutritional awareness, focusing on the subtle energetic qualities of food and the five elements as well as cleansing and building dietary protocols. Polarity nutrition views food as energy and develops an ongoing, ever-changing, and creative nutritional awareness rather than a set of rigid rules.
Verbal Guidance & Active Listening: Compassionate communication focused on building self-awareness and agency. It may involve feeling and expressing emotions, guided visualizations, awareness of limiting beliefs and patterns to create more life-enhancing mental processes.
Polarity Therapy integrates various healing approaches to create a unified system that allows practitioners to layer healing from different perspectives and entry points. This comprehensive approach can also be taught to clients, empowering them to continue shifting, integrating, and learning to regulate and balance on their own. It allows practitioners to use various body-oriented techniques to align the body’s energy, taking into account both spiritual and bioenergetic elements.
For instance, when addressing back pain, a practitioner might:
-
Evaluate body posture, spinal alignment, and muscle tension.
-
Employ energetic techniques to balance the nervous system, especially if physical manipulation is too painful.
-
Address emotional factors associated with back pain, such as stress and trauma, somatically locating and unwinding them in the body.
-
Discuss diet and lifestyle practices based on the 5 elements to improve gut and digestive health, which can influence emotional well-being.
-
Teach energy exercises like the polarity yoga squat to promote digestion, elimination, and emotional regulation.
The Language of Energy
Using the language of energy helps unify our understanding of the true meaning of wholism. Integrating various modalities by thinking about this bigger picture ensures a holistic approach that comprehensively supports clients with any challenge.
My Training
My original Polarity Therapy training was in 1991 and consisted of a 2+ year course with over 800 hours of live in-person training plus supervision and exams, This training included Anatomy & Physiology, Energetic Nutrition and Health Building Diets, an Energetic Exercise System based in Yoga, Cranial-Sacral Unwinding, Reflexology, and Ayurvedic Principals as well as advanced bodywork protocols. My main teachers were John Beaulieu, ND, PhD, Thea Keats Beaulieu, and Gary Strauss. I also studied advanced trauma and nutrition with with Leslie Korn, PhD, MPH.
I am a member of The American Polarity Therapy Association and a Board Certified Polarity Practitioner.
